For anyone looking to explore their inner artist, my associate Suzanne Vasile got to participate in a wonderful creative workshop. Here is her recount of the day...
Earlier this fall I had the pleasure of attending a collage studio guided by artist and teacher, Caris Reid. Reid, a prominent figure in the NY art world, holds monthly thematically guided collage workshops at the The Oracle Club as well as at ISA. Past workshops have featured themes such as Nudes and Matisse. Not being a trained artist myself, I assure you, you need only bring yourself and an open mind, Reid provides the rest; Skillfully curated imagery, colorful paper selections, and all tools needed to create your own collage.
After a brief introduction you are given three blissful hours of cutting, pasting, creating and conversation with fascinating classmates. The creative gamut at my table alone spanned the worlds of clothing, interior & graphic design, to those quite novice in the arts. Offering advice and encouragement when needed, Reid circulated through the studio with genuine delight at what each of us had created. It was in fact quite fascinating to see fifteen wildly different interpretations of the same materials and tools, all of this while enjoying a glass of champagne. Perfect Saturday afternoon outing.
The workshop I attended was unique, in that it was co-hosted by Rachel and Nicholas of Calico Wallpaper. This charming husband and wife team opened their Red Hook creative studio and home to us and provided samples of their amazing marbleized and ombre wallpapers to infuse and inspire our collages. Since many walls in their home feature Calico Wallpaper designs, I was able to see first hand the amazing atmosphere their wallpapers create.
Look for Caris Reid's Snow Bunny themed Collage Studio on December 6th hosted at ISA! This will be the last class in 2014. Classes resume again in February.
