Snack Attack

Growing up all my friends loved to hang out at my home because, "Mrs. Kohn has the best food."  We ate three square meals a day and could snack on whatever we wanted. Breakfast was homemade Hallah bread french toast with a bowl of blueberries doused in cream and sugar. Our pantry had every kind of junk cereal- my favorites being Honey Nut Cheerrios, Raisin Bran & Frosted Flakes. Our candy jar was filled with Starburst, Tootsie Rolls, Kit-Kats and Mini Snickers. Our freezer was stocked with my mom's homemade blueberry ice-cream (which is still the best), Carvel flying saucers, and pints of Ben & Jerry's ice-cream. Our bread drawer was filled with Entenmann's raspberry twist (which now looks nasty, but I loved it at the time), fresh croissants, bagels & a loaf of rye bread. In the refrigerator there was always a whole unsliced smoked salmon, roast chicken, artisanal cheeses, whole milk, fresh squeezed orange juice, Touristenwurst with champagne mustard and yummy leftovers from dinner the night before. Hellman's was the only mayonnaise in the house- regular not light. To top it off, there was always a tin of homemade brownies, a toll house cookie pie, a homemade bread pudding or an apple cobbler on the stove.  Basically we had the best food any kid could want- a combination of home cooked meals and store bought goodies.  

Food trends have changed so much in the last thirty years. Not that I don't still love my french fries with mayonnaise or a yummy apple cobbler, but somehow in spite of the foods I grew up eating, I have turned into a health nut. These days, instead of Hellman's you'll find Just Mayo in my pantry- a close runner up with less preservatives.  My kitchen is stocked with fresh fruits & vegetables, fresh pressed juices, nut butters, gluten-free crackers, a variety of nuts, and yes lots of vitamins and supplements. I am always trying the latest all-natural fruit/nut bars, gluten-free cookies & crackers and yummy spreads that satisfy my cravings. Here are a few of my favorites. Snack away...
